リーズ大学歴史学科
ジョン・チャーターズ(チャートレーズ）教授来日とセミナー開催のお知らせ

　リーズ大学歴史学科（School of History, University of Leeds)のジョン・A・チャーターズ教授（John A. Chartres、姓名はチャートレーズと発音する場合もあります）が、国際交流基金によって、6月26日（土）より7月9日（金）まで来日します。その間、立正大学、東京都立大学、東京大学、早稲田大学、神戸市外国語大学にてセミナー（もしくは、学部生向けの講演）を行います。チャーターズ(チャートレーズ）教授からは、以下の3つのタイトルにてペーパーを準備しているとの連絡を受けています。

・Market integration and UK economic development in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries
・Urban-rural interactions in early modern Britain
・New tastes and the birth of a British 'consumer society' in the eighteenth century

　報告のタイトルからもうかがえるように、チャーターズ(チャートレーズ）教授は、近世や近代イギリスの市場統合、都市と農村関係、交通の発展（特に道路）、消費社会の形成（近年では、蒸留酒製造業者distillerに関する研究をまとめていると聞いています）、イン（旅籠、inn）やタヴァーン（酒場、tavern)、課税記録、といった対象を、定量的なものだけでなく定性的な一次史料の綿密な分析を通じて、研究してきました。これらの研究の多くは、雑誌や論文集の一部として公表され（そのうちのひとつは翻訳されています）、それらの評価も関連学会においてゆるぎないものとなっています。
　チャーターズ(チャートレーズ）教授は、過去に来日経験のあるジョオン・サースク氏Joan Thirskの指導のもとオックスフォードで博士号を取得しました。また、『農業史評論Agricultural History Review』の編集者を1979年から1989年に担当し、1989-1993年までイギリス農業史学会British Agricultural History Societyの会長をつとめました。また、イギリス経済史学会The Economic History Societyの評議員も20年以上にわたってつとめました。以下に、参考HPと主要な業績を記します。
